Kim was born in South Carolina in 2349 and entered Starfleet Academy in 2367. He was during his time at the academy the captain of the velocity team and the editor of the Starfleet Academy newspaper for one year. He has also played the clarinet in the Julliard Youth Symphony Kim graduated from Starfleet Academy as top of his class in 2371 and was assigned to USS Voyager as the senior Operations Officer. He was engaged to a woman called Libby when Voyager disappeared into the Delta Quadrant and Kim felt the loss of home and family more than most other crewmembers. In 2374, Janeway realized the importance of charting space and assigned Kim and Seven to the task of Building the Astrometics lab.
