Neelix was born on Rinax, a moon of Talax, in the Delta quadrant. He avoided military service before the 2366 conquest of his home planet Talax because he thought that fighting in war was wrong. This made him blaming himself for not keeping his family safe when the Haakonian Order irradiated his family and the rest of the population of Rinax with the Metreon Cascade weapon. After the war he worked at a garbage freighter, at a mining colony and as an engineer's assistant at a Trabalian freighter. He eventually bought his own cargo ship and worked with a debris field near the Ocampan home world before he boarded Voyager together with his Ocampan girlfriend Kes. Janeway invited Neelix and Kes to stay on Voyager to help them navigate towards the Alpha quadrant. During his first year he invented, the not very popular, even better than coffee substitute during a period of low energy reserves. This beverage was a rich and quite thick beverage manufactured from a Delta Quadrant seed and designed to replace Earth coffee. His knowledge of the various Kazon Sects were an asset, especially during a period when Voyager tried to form an alliances with the Kazon. He also helped discover that Michael Jonas were a kazon spy. He was the god-father of Samantha Wildman's daughter Naomi. He distracted her with the help of the holo-program The adventures of Flotter when a shuttlecraft her mother was on crashed on a planetoid. He was Voyager's Morale officer, ambassador and chief of the messhall until he left Voyager in 2378 to live in a Talaxian colony. Click here to go to crew downloads.

Kes was brought up in the underground city of their homeworld Ocampa. She had a wish to see the sun and the outside world, so she used some old tunnels that led to the surface. She succeded to bypass the security barrier that prevented enemies from entering the city and was able to reach the surface. She was captured by members of the Kazon-Ogla sect, who tortured her for information on how to enter the Ocampa city. This is where she met and fell in love with Neelix. The Voyager crew helped him to free her and they were both invited to stay on the ship. Kes established a hydroponics garden in cargo bay two to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the crew. She also began to spend time in the sickbay, where the doctor would teach her about medicine. When she started working as a nurse she was shocked how rude the crew was to the doctor and helped him to gain control of the deactivation of his program. She also helped the doctor develop his bedside manner. Her telepathic powers grew after leaving Ocampa, and Tuvok helped her to control her powers. Kes became telekinetic in early 2374 and started to destabilize at the subatomic level. She took a shuttle and left the ship to explore her mental powers.
