Some of Voyager's circuitry has been replaced by gel packs containing bio-neural cells, which can organize information more efficiently and speed up response time. USS Voyager is one of the most efficient ships in Starfleet and is capable of warp 9.975. The fuel needed to power USS Voyager is provided by colliding matter with antimatter in the warp core situated in main engineering. Voyager's nacelles fold up into a higher position during warp and fold down again when travelling at impulse speed. The ship is able to land on the surface of a planet due to its structural integrity and the ground hover footpad system. Voyager has a duranium hull, tricyclic life support and an artifical gravity plating.

Voyager's mission is exploration, science and diplomacy but the crew will still have to be able to defend themselves. The ship is fully equipped with phasers and photon torpedoes. Deflector shields protect the ship against both natural phenomena and enemy attack.

Voyager was built for an Alpha quadrant environment, which means that the crew of Voyager had to adjust the ship for its new environment. They have built a new facility called the Astrometics lab and a new shuttle called The Delta Flyer

The delta flyer was built during Voyagers fifth year in the Delta quadrant (in 2375) when the crew was in need of an improved shuttle. The new shuttle is better prepared for the environment in the Delta quadrant and can take a lot more strain than the shuttles provided with the ship.
